Boston - The Museum of African American History's Abiel Smith School and African Meeting House

 
The African Meeting House and Abiel Smith School on Beacon Hill, both built in the early 1800's, commemorates the history of African-Americans from slavery to the abolitionist movement, with a focus on educational equality.

The African Meeting House served as the center of Boston's African American community throughout the 1800s.

Both are part of the Black Heritage Trail and National Historic Sites.  

Information is available online on talks and tours for the Black Heritage Trail.

National Park Rangers (NPS) are available there throughout the day for free historic talks and tours.

These programs review the history of the African American community on Beacon Hill in the 19th century with a focus on the abolition movement, the Underground Railroad, and the early struggles for equal rights in Boston.

Getting There

By T (Subway) to Boston African Meeting House :

- Take T (Subway) Train green line C, D or E train

- Exit at Park St. station and walk to Beacon Hill towards the Massachusetts State House

- Take a Joy street going inside Beacon Hill (left of Massachusetts State House) to Boston African Meeting House
