Gyeongbokgung Palace - Seoul - Helpful Guide for Visitors


Gyeongbokgung Palace (or Gyeongbok Palace) is the first of four preserved royal palaces built by the Chosun Dynasty in Seoul.

This Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul is often a featured backdrop for many Korean historical dramas.

Rebuilt in 1395, Seoul Gyeongbokgung Palace consists of the throne and royal council hall at the center.

Behind the throne hall (Geunjeongjeon) are the sleeping quarters and on the east side the crown prince's residence and Pavilion (Gyeonghoeru).

Buildings are made of wood and feature a multi-color tiled roof, pillars, and rafters to represent royal authority and position.

After viewing the palace, watch the royal guard changing ceremony on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the main gate.

Recommendations and Tips for visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul

 

- This attraction will take you at least 2 hours to walk the whole area. You can combine this attraction with the National Palace Museum of Korea.

- You will be walking a lot outside so make sure to wear sunscreen/hat or umbrella and bring water and snacks as required.

- If walking a lot is not an option, the essential things to see are the throne room, pavilion, and the royal guard changing ceremony.

- If you plan to go to 3 or more palaces, buy a Book of combination tickets which includes admission to -

   Gyeongbok, Changdeok, Gyeonghui, and Changgyeong palaces;
