Humayun's tomb is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in Delhi.

Humayun’s Tomb is the first Mughal-style garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent.

It inspired architectural features in the construction of the Taj Mahal.

Humayun’s Tomb comprises the 16th-century Mughal garden tombs such as Nila Gumbad, Isa Khan, Bu Halima, Afsarwala, and Barber’s Tomb. 

It is referred to as the dormitory of the Mughals’ as there are over 150 Mughal family members buried here.

Humayun’s Tomb was built in the 1560s by Humayun’s son, Emperor Akbar, in a char bagh style, a four-quadrant garden with the four rivers of Quranic paradise represented with pools joined by channels.

You can enter the gardens with a pavilion located along the center of its eastern and northern walls from the gates on the south and west.

You will have to climb up some steep, narrow stairs to get to the mausoleum- wear good shoes!

Once at the top, you will see The mausoleum of Humayun’s tomb that stands high with two deep vaulted cells on all four sides.

It is shaped in an irregular octagon design with four long sides.  It has a 42.5 m high double marble dome.

The interior has large octagonal chambers on the first and second stories interconnected by corridors.

The structure is decorated in red sandstone with white and black inlaid marble borders.

Another décor has long been raided, but we know from historical accounts that it was decorated with luxurious carpets and a shamiana (a small canopy) above his cenotaph.

The cenotaph (marble coffin) was decorated with copies of the Quran, Humayun’s sword, turban, and shoes.

The tomb is centered at the Shrine of the 14th century Sufi Saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.

Since it is considered favorable to be buried near a saint’s grave, seven centuries of tomb building has led to the area becoming the densest collection of medieval Islamic buildings in India.

Many structures within the complex pre-date Humayun’s Tomb, such as the Barber’s Tomb, Nila Gumbad and, Isa Khan’s garden tomb.

This well-maintained and protected complex is worth seeing, especially if you will not be visiting the Taj.

Getting to Humayun Tomb in Delhi

How to get to the Humayun’s Tomb by Delhi Metro:

- Take the Delhi Metro Violet line also known as the Heritage line to JLN Stadium Station. 

- From JLN Stadium station Humayun’s Tomb is about 1.5 km.  

- You can catch a rickshaw to Humayun’s tomb or you can walk east for about 20 minutes. 

- We recommend taking a rickshaw for a more comfortable trip.

Another option is to take the train from Central Station to Nizamuddin East station, a walk about 500 meters to the tomb.

Humayun's Tomb by Tour Bus :

Another way to go to the tower is to take a tour (Delhi Darshan HoHo Bus).

Travel Tips for visiting Humayun's Tomb

Tips for visiting Humayun's Tomb in Delhi:

Humayun's tomb is a Unesco World Heritage site.

Humayun's tomb has many structures within the complex pre-date Humayun’s Tomb, such as:

- the Barber’s Tomb,

- Nila Gumbad and its garden setting,

- Isa Khan’s garden tomb.

NOTE: 

When phase 3 of construction of the Delhi Metro railway is complete in 2018 -

- You will be able to take the Pink line, also known as the Inner Ring Road line and 

- Exit at Hazrat Nizamuddin station, which will be the closest station.

This attraction will take an hour or more, depending on your interest and ticket line.

Combine with a visit to the India Gate and Gandhi Smiriti.

Depending on your mode of transport and traffic, you could do all of them in one day.

Recommended order if doing all in one day:  Humayun's tomb, Gandhi Smriti, India Gate

If you choose to do any combination of these attractions, end your day at India Gate.
