The India Gate is a war memorial located on the one end of Rajpath street in New Delhi.

This is one of the most important landmarks in the history of India.

This memorial commemorates Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I.

The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, similar to the architectural style of the Gateway of India in Mumbai.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti, or the flame of the immortal soldier, is a structure located in the center of the Arch. 

Based on black marble with a lowered L1A1 Self-loading rifle, capped by a war helmet, surrounded by four urns, each lit to commemorate India's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Soldiers from the Indian armed forces are stationed at Amar Jawan Jyoti around the clock. 

Floral wreaths are placed at the Amar Jawan Jyoti on January 26, by the Prime Minister of India on Infantry Day.

After the sun goes down, India Gate is lit up. 

Surrounding the India Gate is a large park-like area with lawns, food, and trinket stalls. 

It gets very busy here during the late afternoon and evening hours and is a popular hangout for locals and tourists.

Getting to India Gate in New Delhi

By Delhi Metro Railway to India Gate:

- Take the Blue line to Pragati Maidan station (near the Supreme Court of India)

- The station is about 1.5 km from the India gate

- You can walk but we suggest catching a rickshaw or taxi from the metro station to the India Gate for a more comfortable ride.

If you are feeling confident about the Delhi DTC Buses, then-

- you can also take bus 405 STL going to Sunehri Pullah Depot from the Pragati Maidan Gate No.5

- Exit the stop at India Gate.

- Pragati Maidan Gate No.5  is about a 5-minute walk from the Pragati Maidan Metro station. 

- Remember to enter from the back of the bus and have small cash on hand to pay the conductor for your ticket.

OR

- Take Delhi Metro Yellow or Violet line to Central Secretariat station.

- Take a taxi or rickshaw from Central Secretariat station to the India Gate.

Travel Tips for visiting India Gate

Tips for visiting India Gate in New Delhi:

- This attraction will take 30 minutes or more depending on your interest.

- Go during the late afternoon a little before dark to get the most of your visit.

- While here try some street food- make sure whatever you eat or drink is fully cooked with no water ingredients like Pani-puri.

- Be mindful of your things and group as it can get very crowded here.   

- Combine with a visit to Humayun’s Tomb and Gandhi Smriti

  Depending on your mode of transport and traffic, you could do all of them in one day should you choose.

- If you choose to do any combination of these attractions, end your day at India Gate.

  If possible take a tour of the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Viceroy House) while in the area.
